You can play KindClue without an account. Signing in is optional and only exists so your progress can follow you between devices.

What stays on your device

Your puzzle progress (groups found, missed tries, hints opened), the wishes you have uncovered and your language choice are saved in your browser’s local storage on this device. They are not sent to us, and they do not sync between devices. Clearing your browser’s site data removes them.

Optional account and sync

If you choose to sign in with Google, we receive your Google account identifier and email address. We use them only to recognise your account and to show you which account is signed in; we do not receive your password, contacts or anything else from Google. With an account we store, on our servers, your puzzle progress (groups found, missed tries, hints opened, completion time) and the wishes you uncovered, so they appear on all your devices.

A sign-in cookie keeps you signed in for up to 180 days; it is necessary for the account to work and is not used for tracking. You can download your data or delete your account at any time from the account menu. Deleting the account removes it and its stored progress and wishes from our servers straight away; what is saved in your browser stays until you clear it.

What our server receives

Each day’s puzzle is delivered inside the page, so checking your groups and opening hints happens in your browser. Our server only receives a small request asking which day it is, and, if you are signed in, the sync requests described above. These requests are not linked to an account or profile, and we do not store them.

The site runs on Cloudflare, which processes standard connection data such as IP address and browser type to deliver pages and protect the service, as described in Cloudflare’s own privacy policy.

Analytics

To understand how the game is used and keep improving it, we use Plausible Analytics, running on our own server, and may later add Google Analytics 4. They tell us things like how many people visit, which pages they open, the device and approximate region (country or city level), and a few game events: a puzzle started, a group found, a hint opened, a puzzle finished, a wish copied, a card saved or a result shared. These events carry only the puzzle number and simple counts (groups found, hints opened, missed tries), never your wishes, your answers or anything you type.

Plausible does not use cookies or store personal data, and because we host it ourselves the statistics are not shared with Plausible or anyone else. Google Analytics, if we add it, uses cookies or similar identifiers; Google’s processing is described at How Google uses information from sites that use its services.

Advertising

KindClue is free to play and is, or will be, supported by advertising. Ads are shown around the game, never over the cards or during the wish reveal. Advertising partners such as Google may use cookies or similar technologies to show ads, limit how often you see them and measure their performance, and, where permitted, to personalise them based on your visits to this and other sites. You can manage personalised ads at Google Ads Settings.

Cookies and your choices

The game itself does not need cookies. If you sign in, a necessary sign-in cookie is used as described above. Analytics and advertising cookies are only set once those services are switched on, and where the law requires it (for example in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland) only after you agree in a consent banner, where you can also decline or change your choice later. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings.

Current status: Plausible Analytics (self-hosted, no cookies) is active. Google Analytics and advertising are not active yet; this page will be updated before either is switched on.

Children

KindClue is a general-audience game, is not directed at children under 13, and does not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes

We will update this page when we add or change a service, and the date at the top will change.
